Spring is in the Air!

In the air, yes, even if not yet on the calendar.

As it is close, we have to keep an ear and eye out for predators... Knowing this, a poor little chicken might have gone missing or been snatched yesterday. The door to the run had blown shut and the birds couldn't get into the coop in the evening. Luckily Dad heard the rooster sounding off and went to check on them. They were all making their way off into the woods and were promptly rounded up and shooed into the coop. Upon counting, we found that there was one missing! Whether or not she was stranded out in the woods or nabbed by something else was still unclear even after a search early this morning... I hope she finds her way back - if she does, she has earned a name: Lucky.
But, as it is near spring and the time for other animals to feed or prepare for their own young, the chances are slim that we will be seeing her again. Pablo seems to be stepping up to fill that role and our flock is taking shape as yet another newly formed cohesive mix of hens and roos from here and there.

Here is a video of a few of the new girls investigating the first snow of the yesr:

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v13.nonxt3.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Dc918eed9e7f297d8%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331672627%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D7E0A38E015B69497DAF55894D6D9EF4346796EFA.3B0416C3FF6819A44E7EACAA9F846E046676DB00%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Dc918eed9e7f297d8%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3D5O8giYbRu6oP-Hp7pQrhy6Ricys&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

It is Pablo who calls them back inside the coop while I tend to the fallen netting that served as the roof before the snowfall brought it down.

The four hens are still unnamed - more on that soon!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://meet-the-chicks.blogspot.com/2009/12/41-december-has-arrived.html' title='41. Changing of the Guard.

Hi again from the coop!

It has been awhile since last post, but that does not mean nothing is new!
Cassanova, our Golden Laced Polish rooster who filled in for Dotte, the beloved Blue Laced Red Wyandotte we lost to a fox attack in March, will most likely be moving on next week. If all goes well he will be up in a more northern county living out yet another life as a rooster to a flock that has lost its way and needs guidance...
I have been looking for a new home for him because we decided to keep two of our spring-hatched roosters... And here they are:
Pablo (named becase he looks like a painting aka. Picasso) is up on the stump and Reubens (again, after the painter) has his back to us, to the left of Pablo. They are both quite a bit larger than Cassanova (not to mention QUIETER!!). Between the two roosters, our 17 hens should be well guarded... When Cassanova moves on there will be some adjustment, but so far we have not had any battles between the brothers so we will keep our fingers crossed!

Here is Pablo up closer:

Gorgeous!

And, good old Cassanova... Growing Up & Moving Out

The little chicks have turned into chickens - although it will still be a month and a half before the new hens lay eggs. While our hatching statistics were great, the final results were not - out of the 12 eggs, we ended up with four pullets (hens) and eight cockerels (roosters)!! I recently placed an add on craigslist and at backyardchickens.com hoping for a prompt pick-up of the soon-to-be-crowers... Yikes!

With that said, we have decided to keep two of the new roos and re-home the rest, including the Golden Laced Polish, Cassanova (aka Punk), since he is quite loud and not properly congratulated for his efforts. As I write I am hoping they will all get to live out good and useful rooster lives without becoming soup too soon... but, alas, so goes the life of a rooster in these parts.

Here are some pictures of the new lovlies!
Above is an Ameraucana rooster - he is very big and just gorgeous.
The above hen is one of the four females from the new hatch. We were so excited when we saw that one of the blues was a girl!!

As of yet, these birds are all unnamed. We plan on going away for a week after the other roosters are re-homed, and when we come back hopefully the resettling coop drama will be over and then the naming will begin!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://meet-the-chicks.blogspot.com/2009/07/39-growing-up-moving-out.html' title='39. Now that spring is here, not just the birds are singing... we are all happy that warmer days are on the rise.

Our little birds? They are big!
Our big birds? They are bossy! Such is life on the farm.

Last time I posted, the little ones had a makeshift daytime outdoor pen that looked like this:
Now the chicks and the chickens live together in the coop (albeit separated by a cage at night just in case anyone gets any ideas of the negative sort while 'cooped' up!)

This is what it looks like with newly completed fencing:
The big birds free-range during the day if they are lucky while the new ones remain inside the fence. This week I am hoping to get some close up photos of the new birds - since we were not sure who was a keeper (female) and who was getting passed on (male), we have not named any yet. But, one thing is for sure, they are GORGEOUS!!

37. Ice & Snow, Snow & Ice!

As the calendar turns another month and spring is ahead in the not so distant future, I can look back at the winter we have survived through thus far, amazed that we (the chickens, the coop and us) all made it!
Ice & snow were plentiful this year and made for cold treks out to the coop to keep the supply of fresh water from freezing into blocks. We added a heated dog bowl last month which was a good idea, as temps were down in the single digits for a few days. Even so, the girls clucked and brawwwwked their days, providing us with eggs (albeit less than in months with more light).

On a side note, Patty seems to have fully incorporated herself into the flock. This could be in part due to the little feather-headed Buff Laced Polish who is at bottom of the pecking order but might not realize it because she can hardly see. One of these days we are going out there with scissors to give her a new feather-do!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://meet-the-chicks.blogspot.com/2009/02/31-ice-snow-snow-ice.html' title='31. After opening it up, I like to stand back and watch them race out -their first breath of outdoor air for the day like the first they have ever had. Do the chickens remember being outside yesterday? Do they remember their past? I used to try and count the ten of them as they raced out, but since we have added more hens and subtracted a rooster, the dynamics have changed and they don't all rush out in a bunch. The three newest ones have been slowly adjusting to their new lives with us. The Partridge Cochin, Patty, is a loner and keeps to herself mostly, but the other two that I call Lucille and Carmen are best buddies. Pulled on a cold day out from the bundle of feathers made up of ten chicks, we took these two home and have only just recently opened up their dog crate mini-coop housed inside the main coop. They have gotten by just fine with the other hens because they have no idea they are at the bottom of the pecking order. Their presence has benefited Patty as well since that role was hers when these two were kept apart and she was the new one. Carmen, who my husband calls "Thing Two" assimilated quickly and explored the outside right from the start. Lucille, or "Thing One" is a shy girl and peeps loudly when Carmen is out of sight.

Today, as I stood in the chilly December air and watched the chickens make their way towards their favorite places, I was pleased to see Patty settling into place amongst the bunch. She was trying to keep up with the crowd on their way to the bird seed. I turned the corner and opened the lock on the latch of the dutch door. I saw Lucille over by the waterer. About to step inside, Carmen lay at the foot of the door. She was quite still. I am not certain, because I didn't witness the events, but I have suspicions that our one remaining rooster, the very docile and lovely Dottie who has tried to make the moves on Patty recently, might have tried to mate with Carmen. She didn't survive whatever happened to her after I left her snugly tucked in against Lucille in their mini-coop last evening. Poor Lucille. She had a very best friend and now does not know how to get along without. As I try to coax her to befriend me by holding out morsels of homemade bread, she makes quiet peeps.
I wonder if she will survive without her buddy.

R.I.P.
Carmen aka. Just as I thought, we have TWO roosters!

Penguin, now mostly called Roo or Rooey, crows at 5:45-6:00am for about a half an hour. What I thought was two different sounds that he made now seem more like another rooster! Listen for yourself and take a guess...

The first sound is rooster #2, and the second is Penguin/Rooey, the black one. They then alternate.
((Sounds added soon!!!))

Based on what the rest of the chickens look like (comb and feathers are not rooish), our guess (confirmed by members of BackyardChickens.com!) is that the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, Garnet (mostly called Dottie)is in fact the second mystery rooster. Welcome, finally, Black Star hens!

Yesterday morning we made the swap.
The Jersey Giant and the Black Minorca hens have to now fend for themselves among more than 65 mixed birds -ducks, geese, turkeys and chickens of every variety! There truly is a pecking order, and I witnessed the process with my own eyes...
Guinness, the Minorca should be fine since she was the very bottom of the ladder in our bunch and hardly allowed enough space to roost or access treats. Now there are so many smaller bantam birds under her that she is sure to get her share!
Peeps, the Giant, has other chickens just like her kind and is real big, so she should fare well also.

We took home our newest additions, the three Black Star hens, and let them have the coop to themselves after letting the rest of the bunch out for the day to free-range.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_b4rxh1rVbwM/SJ11G-laawI/AAAAAAAADZw/rjhVLRun4lU/s320/IMG_5833.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5232467104813968130" />
The new girls kept to themselves for most of the day and did not roam far...
Truthfully, they are a little war torn and aggressive because of their previous home life. Finding your place among so many birds must have been a daily battle and exhausting!
I hope they acclimate well to our environment and relax a little! We have such a little flock (all things considered) and the one rooster(so far!), Penguin, is most certainly the boss. Hopefully these elements will help to calm them down.
Here is the yet unnamed most golden of the new hens:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_b4rxh1rVbwM/SJ12I_IrejI/AAAAAAAADZ4/wUZUoTKQp1Y/s320/IMG_5860.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5232468238833252914" />
As you can see, her tail feathers show wear from her previous life.
Welcome!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://meet-the-chicks.blogspot.com/2008/08/18-welcome-finally-black-star-hens.html' title='18. Along with our order, three other families combined together into a giant shipment of 50 chicks. At a day old, who knows what any of the little feathered hoppers are?? Remember how small they were? Based on the order placed, the mystery chicks could be Jersey Giants or Black Minorcas.

Now left with chicks we have lovingly named and cared for these past three months, we can't really trade again.

Or so I thought!
Monday morning I woke up at dawn to...you guessed it... crowing. It was some odd item thing that I couldn't remember and I said "it was something crazy, like toaster".

Somehow, our younger son still had this name in mind when he gazed at the fluffy white thing among our bunch... So, Toaster it is (better than the story hen's true name of Mailbox, no?)

Behind Toaster is the darkest black of our Black Star chicks. She is colored a little bit differently in that she does not have a 'star' on the top of her head and her underside is more white than cream. I keep wondering if we will have some mystery tufted rooster instead of a brown egg layer, but only time (and a 4:30am wake up call) will tell.

She is named "Penguin" thanks to a friend of the older son.
